French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
