On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
