The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.
